Link: http://www.prio.no/News/NewsItem/?oid=63033555

The University of Oslo (UiO), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) have established a research school in peace and conflict located at PRIO. The Research School in Peace and Conflict  offers advanced research training for the next generation of peace and conflict scholars by building on, and expanding, networks and expertise at the UiO, NTNU and PRIO. The collaboration is characterized by multidisciplinary approaches to peace and conflict issues, international profile and outlook, and research excellence. The research school will start in April 2011.

Deadlines:

Applications can be sent to PRIO by 15 February, 2011.

Applications must include; a 5-page project description, a certificate of acceptance at a PhD program as well as funding confirmation.

Decisions will be made by March 15, 2011.

Contact person:

Kristoffer Lidén ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ).

Who can apply?

It is a prerequisite for applicants that they

  • have been accepted in a PhD program at an institution which awards academic degrees;
  • have funding for their PhD (the research school does not provide funding);
  • and are within the first year of their PhD work.

Students should be able to integrate most of the courses of the research school in the compulsory research education of their PhD program at the University. For students at NTNU and UiO, questions in this regard can be directed to:

NTNU: Ola Listhaug ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )

UiO: Dag Harald Claes ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )

What will be offered?

Introductory course in Peace and Conflict Studies. This two-day course will be offered annually, and is mandatory. Key concepts and topics of peace and conflict studies will be introduced by PRIO researchers.

Research courses. A minimum of two substantive courses that present ongoing research at PRIO will be offered annually. These will be taught by scholars from PRIO, NTNU and UiO, or by invited international experts. Examples of potential topics for these courses include international and civil war, conflict resolution and peacebuilding, security, and the diversity of violence. Courses will also address cross-cutting themes like gender, migration, religion and climate change, as related to core questions of peace and conflict research.

Methodology courses. It is required that the PhD students follow at least one methodology course. In 2011, the following courses are offered:

  • Qualitative Research Methods and the Study of Civil War (2-5 May 2011)
  • Quantitative Research Methods, STV 9025, UiO (May 2011)

Course in scholarly writing and presentation: All research school participants are required to attend the 3-day workshop “Writing for Scholars” which takes students systematically through the most problematic areas of scholarly writing: audience, core argument, and structure. It also covers giving and receiving feedback, developing good writing habits, and how to give effective presentations.

Symposium. The members of the research school will meet in one or two internal workshops per semester of about two days to present their work and comment on the presentations of fellow students. When appropriate, tutoring professors will be invited as commentators. The symposiums will build explicitly on skills learned in the writing workshop.

Project development skills. The research school will offer elective courses in project development and grant writing.

PRIO Junior Researchers’ Forum (JRF). All research school participants are invited to participate in the Junior Researchers’ Forum at PRIO. The JRF is a forum where early-career researchers can talk about their ongoing work and get feedback from their peers. Members comprise PhD students, MA students and research assistants from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines. The JRF meets monthly on Mondays at lunchtime at PRIO, and one or two members present their work each session.

Open Seminars. The research school will organize open seminars in cooperation with the students in the research school. These will be based on the interests of the students.

International presentations. The doctoral students will be encouraged to present their work at international conferences and seminars, and will together with their tutoring professors develop a plan/schedule to present their work at such events.
